Fibre Average Distribution
Fibre length distribution within a cotton bale determines the average processing behaviour of the lint during yarn manufacturing. The 50 percent span length represents the distance from the clamp where half of the fibres in the test specimen beard remain. It provides a reliable estimate of the mean length of the fibres.
Fibrographic Scanning Action
Optical scanning of the fiber beard using a specialized light source generates a span length curve that measures specimen thickness at set intervals. To find the 50 percent span length, the sensor locates the point on the curve where the light attenuation is halved compared to the starting point. This value represents the bulk of the fiber mass.
Yarn Uniformity Calculations
Sliver drafting during yarn preparation relies on the relationship between short and long fibres to maintain mass consistency. If the 50 percent span length is too short relative to the longer fibres, the drafting field becomes unstable, creating thin and thick spots in the yarn. This parameter is used to calculate the uniformity ratio.
Higher ratios indicate a more uniform fiber population, which translates directly to fewer end downs in the spinning frame.
Mill Quality Testing
Quality control laboratories monitor this value to predict the combed sliver yield and potential waste. It acts as a guide for setting combing machine parameters to remove shorter fibres. Consistent monitoring ensures that the blend maintains its processing characteristics through carding and drawing.
